The role played by the Russian soldiers in military operations during the World War I in Serbia and on the Macedonian front was undoubtedly important for the Serbian army. The cooperation started at the outbreak of the war in an august of 1914 and lasted until 1917. During that period the Russian soldiers, together with the Serbian army, have fought and died in the combats against the Central Powers. However, their death was related not only to the war battles. They’ve also died in Austrian captivity due to illness, hard work and terrible life conditions in prison camps. They’ve been buried in the military cemeteries that have spread from Greece until Austria‐Hungary (northern parts of the latter Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes). After the end of the war, soldiers and war prisoners have become an object of the commemorations. In the first place the members of the Russian emigration in Serbia started to commemorate them by erecting monuments and memorials and gathering their remains in ossuaries. The main reasons they underwent this action was the bad condition of the graves. Their role was crucial for the locating and preserving the resting places of the fallen soldiers.
