The area of southern Hungary during the Middle Ages was charac terized by significant historical dynamics. The renewal of the Byz antine presence in the area south of the Sava and Danube rivers and the strengthening of the Kingdom of Hungary inevitably led to an increase in the number of border conflicts. The transit of travelers to the Holy Land further influenced the escalation of conflicts on the Hungarian-Byzantine border. The aim of this paper is to provide a general view of the role of the southern borderlands of Hungary in border conflicts during the second half of the 11th century by analyzing narrative sources.
